Dear Subscriber First Name, AsianBossGirl began as a podcast intended to create and make space for Asians in America and globally. As an extension of that safe space, each issue of this newsletter is intended to inform, support, inspire, and celebrate. Celebration and joy don’t come easy lately. Last week’s shooting in Atlanta that took the lives of eight, including six Asian women, was a direct punch to the solar plexus. I cried the next morning before work and throughout the day—something I hid by keeping my camera off during meetings. This grief runs deep and wide. At a minimum, it encompasses the heavy silence I’ve observed in the workplace, an understanding of how extensively white supremacy runs, the continued sense that we are viewed as a monolith and as perpetual foreigners even if this is our home, the nasty fetishization of Asian women, gaslighting in the form of refusing to call it a hate crime, and so.much.more. While processing, I’ve found it helpful to have discussions with friends, to check in with my parents and make sure they’re okay, to connect with my local Korean florist, and to prioritize rest. I’ve also been so grateful for the work of Asian American leaders, especially in the social justice and mental health spaces. Our usual “Have You Heard” section lists some of these resources that have helped me personally to think, learn, and feel less alone. I hope they help you, too. Thinking of you and your loved ones, and holding the victims and their families in our hearts. Wishing us all continued community, safety, and kindness. We belong. With so much love,
