Dear Subscriber First Name, The adage “home is where the heart is” rang very true this year. Many of us found ourselves separated from our loved ones, especially the elderly. In an effort to protect them, ourselves, and the public, we delayed or cancelled trips, and waited for the “right” time to visit. After necessary precautions and careful planning, I was able to visit my parents after almost a full year. This extended stay is one that my heart and soul very much needed—to eat my Umma’s cooking, to physically see my parents fine and healthy day to day, to smother them in hugs despite their feigned annoyance and secret joy. Admittedly, this visit came with lessons, too. Long periods of shelter-at-home in solitude greatly affected my already introverted capacity for other people’s energies. On top of that, holding space for the differences between my parents’ and my politics, mindset, communication styles, and world views is a constant exercise. But I’m humbled by the knowledge that this, too, shall pass, and all too quickly, and knowing there are folks who yearn to be with their own families this holiday. This holiday season, many have made the decision to abstain from family reunions, or to keep it simple and small. Wherever you are, whomever you’re with, our team is thinking of you. Wishing you a warm, safe, healthy, and love-abundant holiday! See you in 2021,
