Dear Subscriber First Name, Not to start this off like a corporate email, but I hope this letter finds you and your loved ones safe, well-fed, and sound. I truly do. With the daily influx of new stories of hate crimes affecting our community, I’m often exhausted by the constant heightening of emotions. Up and down they go, depending on what I’ve read or watched. I often wonder who will be our hero. Escaping in the CW’s pilot of Kung Fu was surprisingly just what I needed. Olivia Liang stars as Nicky Shen, a woman in her early 20s who seizes her life as her own when she decides to learn the Shaolin teachings from her Shifu for three years in China. From the start of the show, we have a woman who is intentional, independent, brave, and heavily invested in her community—whether that community is in California’s Bay Area or an isolated monastery in the motherland. She defies the life that was sculpted for her in order to wield the chisel and carve her own way. In doing so, she sets off on an incredible adventure linked to lore and heals her family, community, and herself along the way. Watching this Asian American woman speaking her truth and kicking butt, I remembered something so important: we are the heroes we’ve been waiting for. We have it within each of us to care for our families, our communities, ourselves, and stand up for what we believe in. I almost forgot how good a non-Netflix show can be, and I am so excited to see how Kung Fu unfolds.
