Dear Subscriber First Name, This month, love is on our minds. Love is a driving force. It moves us to care for one another, to do something just to see someone smile. Love is why people build relationships, brick by brick. Love (and communication) is also how that foundation remains intact, no matter how shit the weather may be. Love can be a safe haven, and it can also be the wind beneath our wings. What shape does love take? We observe love between people in love, like our Helen and her fiancé Philip. We feel it when we have heart-to-hearts with our friends, or when someone lets you know you’re on their mind. We feel love reverberating when our community stands up against hate, for each other, for our elders—our elders, who were some of the first people with whom we experienced what it is to be loved and cared for. And then there is self-love, which I’ve come to understand as the foundation to how we treat everyone else in our lives. When we show ourselves compassion, when we give ourselves space, we are more able to do so for others. This was a stressful month with the horrifying and ongoing attacks on elderly Asians, the fight for media coverage and the indignation of feeling like we have to assert ourselves, to convince others we matter. So this month—but really everyday moving forward—I hope you love up on yourselves and the people you care about. You, we, deserve it. With love and solidarity,
