Dear Subscriber First Name, As more of my girlfriends become mothers for the first time, I’ve felt a sense of awe, admiration, and an expansion of empathy. For the first time, I’m getting an inside look into how the lives of the parents—especially mothers—change after bringing a child into this world. I’ve become more staunchly resolute in my opinion that paid maternity leave (and parental leave in general) is a must, and should be longer than the three months that’s become customary in America (for those lucky enough to have access). I feel a deep sense of respect and appreciation for the (new) mothers who are so honest about their experiences. The surprises, the triumphs, the sleepless nights and the toll on their mental, emotional, and physical health—details that used to be more “hush hush”, lest you come off even remotely “negative”. But the thing with life is that multiple truths can coexist. A mother can be happy and grateful to have a child, and also feel utterly depleted, unprepared, scared, and doubtful. Parents can mourn the loss of their former lives and personal time, even though they wouldn’t give up their current lives for anything. Each moment I spend with my friends and their little ones feels like a gift. How amazing to witness little people grow? At the same time, observing the daily toll that being a parent takes helps me see my friends in a more loving light. I’m also able to better see my own parents in a more loving, empathetic light. Perhaps this is part of what life is about… expanding our understanding of life to include the experience’s of others, learning to understand each other a bit better. I’d also like to take a moment and acknowledge any readers who may have lost a child, are trying to conceive, or are unable to. We see and love you too. With Appreciation,
