Dear Subscriber First Name, Happy APAHM, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! This year’s APAHM feels extra significant. It feels like we as a collective (not a monolith!) have stepped into our power and claimed our space in ways I didn’t see too often growing up. And while we’ve grown louder in defiance, I’ve also heard us grow louder in celebrating our joy. Parents are having tough, honest, and celebratory conversations with their young children or elderly parents about race. People are taking bystander intervention workshops, or learning self-defense. Readers are choosing to read more works by Asian writers. People are advocating for their AAPI community at work. Friends are opening up for the first time and sharing their experiences of growing up Asian in America, or finding comfort and deeper significance in cooking foods that taste like home. One thing I’d like to acknowledge is the complexity of identity, and the idea that at the intersection of the various identities with which you associate, a unique identity can exist. One that is your own. This means there’s space for you, as you are. There’s room for all of us, in our full humanity, regardless yet inclusive of where we were born, how we look, who we love, who we call our parents, what we eat or what cultural customs we value. I’m so excited to see what folks in the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities create next, and how the spectrum of AAPI representation will broaden and deepen in quantity and nuance. We are not a monolith. We are powerful beyond measure. We belong. And we’re just getting started. With pride,
