Dear Subscriber First Name, As if 2020 wasn’t rough enough, this year began with a bang. By now, you’ve probably seen the memes about skipping 2021 that circulated less than 7 days into the year. Though not actually possible, the notion was certainly tempting, and it got me thinking… What would be lost by skipping 2021? I often consider an economics term, “opportunity cost,” when weighing the pros/cons between two options. Opportunity cost is “the forgone benefit that would have been derived by an option not chosen” (Investopedia.com). Take 2020. In just one year, we collectively experienced so much sorrow, loss, anguish, uncertainty, and pain. Yet in spite of the darkness, our hope reigned supreme. Suddenly, priorities became undeniably clear, be it stability, social and racial justice, health, time with loved ones, time alone, being outdoors, or the sanctity of home. Without 2020 and the Great Pause, I wonder how long we would have taken to identify, admit, accept, and incorporate these values. Going back to our hypothetical question… we may feel way more uncertain going into this year than years prior, but I like to believe that we’re strong enough to weather what comes, and resilient enough to find the good. I heard a beautiful quote today, “when the music changes, so must your dance.” In this year of 2021, come what may, let’s change up our dances as needed, and keep our hope alight. As Poet Amanda Gorman reminded us on Inauguration Day, “there is always light if only we’re brave enough to see it, if only we’re brave enough to be it.” With Love,
